Lesson 9

August 26, 1894

The Birth of Jesus
John 2: 6-11 (Full Lesson, vs. 1-11)

6 And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew :) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Golden Text. — “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory.” — John 2:11

The Lesson Story
Three days after Jesus has called Philip and Nathanael he went to Cana, in Galilee where Nathanael lived. Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding. His mother was also there. When the wine was all gone, his mother said to him, “they have no wine.” Jesus answered, “What have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” There were six large stone water pots there. Jesus said to the servants, “fill these with water;” and they filled them to the brim. Then said Jesus, “Draw out some of it, and take it to the governor of the feast” (the man who had the care of the food). When he had tasted it, not knowing where it came from, he was surprised, and said to the bridegroom (the man who had been married), “Every one gives the people good wine first, and after that the poorer kind; but you have kept the good until the last.” This was the first miracle that Jesus did. A miracle is something that a man cannot do, unless God works in him. Why did Jesus do this miracle? To show that he had the power of God, and that he wanted to help others.

Jesus in the Home
A little girl went on an errand to an elegant house. The lady was proud of her home, and she showed Jennie the carpets, pictures, ornaments and flowers, and asked, “Don't you think these things are lovely?” “They are pretty" said Jennie. “What a beautiful home for Jesus to visit? Does he ever come here?” “Why, no,” said the lady. “Don't you ever ask him?” asked Jennie; “we have only a room and a bed-room, and we have no carpets or pretty things, but Jesus comes and makes us very happy.” The lady told her husband what Jennie had said, and he replied, “I have often thought that we ought to thank God for his goodness and ask him to come and live with us.” They became Christians, and Jesus came to live with them and made them happy. Jesus blesses every home to which he comes.
