Lesson 8

August 19, 1894

First Disciples of Jesus
John 1:35-41 (Full lesson vs. 35-49)

35 Again the next day after John stood and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, what seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon, Peter's brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, we have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

Golden Text. — “We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.” — John 1:41

The Lesson Story
Six weeks after Jesus’ baptism, John was still preaching, and baptizing in the river Jordan. Two fishermen from Galilee had heard John, had repented of their sins, and had been baptized by him. One day they were standing near him, when a strange man came walking toward them. John said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” They knew then that this stranger was Jesus. They followed him at once. Jesus turned and asked them, “What seek ye?” They asked, “Master, where do you live?” He said, “Come and see.” They went with him and stayed all day. One was Andrew; the other was John who wrote this story. Andrew went to his brother, Simon Peter, and said, “We have found the Christ,” and brought him to Jesus. Perhaps John also brought his brother James. The next day as Jesus walked toward Galilee with his new friends; he met Philip, and said to him, “Follow me.” Philip obeyed at once and followed Jesus. Then Philip found Nathanael, and said, “We have found the one whom Moses and the prophets wrote about — Jesus of Nazareth; come and see him.” Nathanael went and followed Jesus. This made six new friends in two days — Andrew, John, Peter, James, Philip, Nathanael. These friends always loved Jesus, and followed him. A disciple of Jesus is one who follows him and believes his words. Will you follow Jesus and be his disciple?

Looking for Jesus
Once, a little boy thought he would like to find Jesus and be one of his disciples; so he started before his parents were up. He left this little note for them: “Dear Papa and Mamma: — I am going to find Jesus. I wish to be one of his disciples. I am very little, but I can do something, and by and by I will come home and tell you all about it. Charley.” After awhile he grew tired, and stopped at a house where an old couple lived. He asked for some food. While eating it, he asked, “Can you tell me where Jesus and his disciples are today?” They said, “We do not know.” They said to each other, “Is it not strange that this little boy should try to find Jesus, while we have never tried to find him?” So they knelt and asked God to lead them to Jesus.
