Lesson 7

August 12, 1894

Temptation of Jesus
Matt. 4:3-10 (Full lesson, vs.1-11)

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, if thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by ever word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, it is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, all these things I will give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord they God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Golden Text. — “In all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” — Heb. 4:15

The Lesson Story
After Jesus was baptized, he went away alone into a wild place. For forty days he ate nothing and became very hungry. When he went to this lonely place, the devil went there too. He wanted to try Jesus to see if he would do wrong. The devil said to him, “If you are really the Son of God, you need not be hungry, for you could easily turn these stones into bread.” Jesus knew what the Bible said, and he replied, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone.” Then the devil took him to Jerusalem and set him a high place on the temple, and said, “Cast yourself down; if you are the Son of God, the angels will take care of you, and so you will not get hurt.” Jesus answered from the Bible, “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Then the devil took him up into a very high mountain and showed him at once all the great places of the world, and said, “If you will fall down and worship me, I will give you all these things.” But Jesus answered again from the Bible, “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Then the devil left him, and angels came and brought him food. Three times the devil asked Jesus to do wrong, but he would not mind him.

Do You Pray—“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”?

“I'll Keep My Eyes Shut”
Little Henry had been very sick, and was just able to be up and about the room. Once when he was alone his sister came in, eating some cake. Henry's mother had told him he must eat nothing but what she gave him, and that he could not have what the other children had until he was stronger. His appetite was coming back; the cake looked inviting; he wanted very much to take a bite, and his sister would gladly have given it to him. What did he do? “Jennie,” said he, “please run right out of the room with that cake, and I’ll keep my eyes shut while you go, so that I shan't want it.” Wasn’t that a good way for him to avoid temptation? I think so. Children and grown-up people too, would escape from sin and trouble if they would try little Henry's way.

Lesson Truth
When tempted, Jesus did not sin.
