Lesson 4

July 22, 1894

Flight Into Egypt
Matthew 2: 13, 14; 19-23 (full lesson, vs. 13-23)

13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.

21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets. He shall be called a Nazarene.

Golden Text. — “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in” — Psalm 121: 8

The Lesson Story
After the wise men had gone home, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him." Joseph obeyed at once, and they started at night to travel 300 miles to Egypt. When the wise men did not come back to tell where they had found Jesus, Herod was very angry. He ordered all the boys of two years old and under, in and around Bethlehem, to be killed, thinking that Jesus would be among them; but God was taking care of him. Many little children were killed by this wicked king, and there was weeping in many homes. After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared again to Joseph in a dream, in Egypt, and told him to take the child And his mother and return to the land of Israel. When Joseph heard that the son of Herod was now the king, he was afraid to go back to Bethlehem, and God told him to go to Nazareth, a town in another part of Palestine called Galilee.

Lesson Hymn
Let us trust our Father’s keeping,
All the time and everywhere;
He will watch us, never sleeping;
We are safe in his dear care.

Can You Say—
“"He will hide me, he will hide me,
Where no harm can e’er betide me;
He will hide me, safely hide me,
In the shadow of his hand."”

The Heaven-Built Wall
While the French army was retreating from Moscow every one fled from it who could get away. A crippled boy was lying in a cottage unable to leave his bed. He urged his mother to fly with the little girls while there was time. "I am safe," he said; "no one will hurt a helpless boy." "We are all safe," said his mother. "God will build up a wall of defense; he will be our refuge." They all went to sleep trusting in God. When they awoke in the morning, they found it had snowed all night, and the little cottage was so covered that it could not be seen. The soldiers came and robbed the other houses, but this one escaped, for it was hidden behind the wall of snow, which God had sent as its sure defense. God always takes care of those who trust him.

Lesson Truth
When in danger, God will take care of me.
