Visit of the Wise Men
Matthew 2: 8-12 (full lesson, vs.
1-12)
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
Golden Text. — “They saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him.” — Matt 2:11
The Lesson Story
After Jesus had been presented in the
temple, his parents took him back to Bethlehem. Not long after this there came
to Jerusalem some wise men who had traveled a great distance. They went to the
kind and asked, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have
seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” When Herod heard
these words he was troubled. He was afraid a new king was coming who would take
his crown. He asked the priests and scribes where Christ should be born. They
told him that he was to be born in Bethlehem. Herod told the wise men to go to
Bethlehem and search diligently for the young child; and when they had found
him to bring him word again, that he might go and worship him also. The wise
men left Jerusalem, and the star appeared again and went before them, till it
stood over the house where the young child was. When they went into the house
they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped
him. Then they gave him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. They did not go
again to Jerusalem, for God told them in a dream not to go back to Herod, and
so they went home another road. These wise men traveled many miles to find
Jesus. We ought not to think anything too hard to do for Jesus.

Gifts for Jesus
When Mabel was seven years old she kept
her birthday by doing kind deeds to others. Mamma always made her a birthday
cake, full of raisins and nicely frosted. Mabel asked her mother if she would
not make seven smaller cakes this time instead of one large cake. She wanted to
share her birthday happiness. Her mother was glad to do it; and so on Mabel's
birthday there were six little white boxes to send away. One of them went to a
little lame boy, one to a poor old woman; one to an orphan sewing girl, one to
a poor boy Mabel had seen playing on the street, two to a pair of twins whose
mother washed for a living. Mabel declared that her cake was the best she had
ever had. Her mamma knew that it was sharing it with others that made it taste
so good.
