Lesson 2

July 8, 1894

Presentation in the Temple
Luke 2: 25-32 (Full Lesson, vs. 25-38)

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Golden Text.— “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” — Luke 2:32

The Lesson Story
When the wonderful Babe that you learned about last week was eight days old, he was named Jesus. This name means Saviour. When Jesus was forty days old his parents took him to Jerusalem, to the temple, to give him to God. They made an offering of two young pigeons. In the temple that day there was s good man who was very old. He had been waiting for a long time to see the Messiah. God had promised him that he should not die till he had seen him. The Holy Spirit led him to the temple just at the time Mary and Joseph were there with the child Jesus. As soon as he saw the little babe, the Spirit told him that this was the Messiah. He took the babe in his arms and thanked God, and said he was ready now to die. He said, “Mine eyes have seen thy salvation.” He also said that Jesus was “a light to lighten the Gentiles.” Mary and Joseph wondered at what Simeon said about the child. A good woman named Anna then came into the temple, and when she saw the child she told the people that he was the one who would redeem them from sin.

Unto us a Saviour’s given;
Humbly as a little child
Jesus came to us from heaven,
Holy, pure, and undefiled.

Can You Say—
"The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin,
The light of the world is Jesus;
Like sunshine at noonday his glory shone in,
The light of the world is Jesus.
Come to the light, ‘tis shining for thee;
Sweetly the light has dawned upon me;
Once I was blind, but now I can see;
The light of the world is Jesus.

Jesus the Light of the World
A little girl had been reading in her Bible where it says “I am the light of the world.” After thinking for a while she said, “Mamma, how can the Saviour shine into my heart, into yours, into papas, and other peoples” all at the same time?”

The sun was shining brightly into the room when the child asked this question, and her mother said, “Look at the sun, my child; does it not shine bright and full into your eyes? So it shines full into my eyes, and if all the millions of people on our half of the world should look at it just now, it would shine into the eyes of every one. Yet there is only one sun.” So Jesus shines into the heart of every one who looks to him with love. We have but to turn our eyes to him to have his light stream into our hearts.
