Lesson 12

September 16, 1894

Jesus at Jacob’s Well
John 4: 9-15 (Full lesson vs. 9-26)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, how is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, if thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again.

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

Golden Text. — “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” — John 4:14

The Lesson Story
About eight months after Jesus had talked with Nicodemus, he and his disciples went from Judea into Galilee. On his way through Samaria he came to a city called Sychar, and being weary with walking, and hungry and thirsty, he sat down to rest upon the stones of a well, called Jacob‘s well, because Jacob had built it a great many years before. His disciples went into the city to buy food. While he sat there alone, a woman came to the well, bringing a bucket and rope to draw water, and a jar on her head, in which to carry it. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.” She wondered at his asking her for water, and said, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask drink of me, a woman of Samaria, for the Jews and Samaritans are not friends.” Jesus said, “If you knew who it is that saith ‘give me to drink,’ you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where do you get that living water, are you greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well?” Jesus said, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again; but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” Then the woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water that I thirst not.” She thought he meant water for the body like that in the well, but he was speaking of water for the soul — the Holy Spirit which comes from heaven and gives us eternal life.

Lesson Hymn
There’s a stream from Calvary’s mountain,
Flowing full and bright and free;
Life is offered at this fountain,
Endless life for you and me.

Can You Say—
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water: thirsty one. Stoop down and drink, and live”

The Living Water
A little Christian girl, by her bright example and loving words, had led her father to be very sorry for his many years of wickedness, but he had not yet found the Saviour and was very unhappy. One day, seeing how worried he was about his sins, his little daughter said, “Papa, if you were thirsty wouldn’t you go and get a drink of water?” Then she told him what Jesus had said about the living water. He saw at once what he needed. His soul was thirsty for Jesus, and he made up his mind to go and get the living water, which had so long been waiting for him. He went to Jesus and gave his heart to him, and got the living water, and ever after this he was very happy. The home was also made very much happier, for the man became more loving and kind.

Lesson Truth
Jesus gives the water of life.
