Lesson 11

September 9, 1894

Jesus and Nicodemus
John 3: 1-7 (Full lesson, vs.1-16)

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Golden Text. — “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but has everlasting life.” — John 3:16

The Lesson Story
Some people in Jerusalem believed in Jesus when they saw his wonderful miracles. One was a ruler of the Jews, named Nicodemus. He was on of those who were very strict in keeping the laws of Moses, and thought themselves better than others. He wanted to know more about Jesus and his teachings. He went to see him at night, when it would be quiet and they could be alone. He said to Jesus, "We know you are a teacher come from God, for you could not do these miracles unless God were with you." Jesus answered, "You must be born again." Nicodemus asked "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he become a little child and begin life again?" Jesus did not mean that his body must begin to live again. He meant that his soul or spirit must become new. The part which is sinful must be made new by God’s Spirit. Nicodemus could not see how this could be, so Jesus said, "This is as wonderful as some other things you cannot understand; you hear the wind blow, but you do not know where it comes from, or where it goes. So God’s Spirit comes into the heart and takes away sin and makes it new." The heart is made new by believing in Jesus and loving him. Then Jesus spoke the words of our Golden Text---the most beautiful words that he ever spoke upon the earth.

What Made a Little Girl Glad

A New Heart
"Mamma," asked little Helen, "How will God get my new heart in?" "My darling, what do you mean?" "Why, my verse, mamma, don’t you know? ‘A new heart will I give you.’ How will he get out this one that I have, and put the other one in? Won’t it hurt me?" "Dear little blossom, God does not mean the heart that you hear beating; he means the part that thinks and loves, or that hates anything. That is what God promises to change." "Have I two hearts, mamma---a think heart and a beat heart?" "No, darling, not just that. When God says he will give you a new heart, he means that he will make you love to do good things and not want to do naughty things." "O," said Helen, "I see how it is---it is my think that God is going to make new."
