To the Scholar— Dear Little Friend:— I know you are surprised, and glad, to see the Quarterly in a new form. It has been growing for many years and the time has come to give it a larger and better dress, such as a new cover, more pictures, new songs, Bible verses and a map. I hope you will try to keep it clean, and not let it get torn. Read the Bible verses yourself, if you can; if not, ask mother to read them to you. Learn the Golden Texts, Lesson Hymns, and Lesson Truths; and if you are seven or eight years of age, I think you will be able to learn the answers to the Questions, and also the Catechism. If you learn the "Can you say?" you will sometimes wish to use these words in your prayers. These lessons teach you about the Baby Jesus, the Boy Jesus, and the Man Jesus. They tell about the most wonderful boy that ever lived, and how he grew. I hope you will ask God to help you to grow to be like him. One way that will help you to be like him, is to learn all about him from his holy word. Learn also the hymns "Looking Unto Jesus," and "The Child Jesus," and sing them at home.
To the Mother—Dear Mother: —You can help your little ones by reading to them the selected Scripture, and telling the story in your own words. You can teach the Golden Texts, Lesson Hymns, and Questions, as the children may be able to learn them. You can read to them from the books the story of the child Jesus. If you desire to train your little ones for Jesus, do not leave this work entirely to the Primary Class Teacher. Your work at home will greatly assist the teacher. Sing the hymns with the children until they know and love them. Remember to pray for the teacher as well as for your little ones.
To the Teacher— Dear Teacher: — You are rejoicing that your scholars will have a whole year in the Life of Christ. Do you realize the great responsibility which rests upon you so to teach these beautiful lessons that the image of Christ shall be firmly fastened upon the little hearts? The Quarterly has been enlarged, and such verses printed from the Scripture selections as will interest the little ones. The Lesson Hymns and music have been specially prepared for these lessons. "Looking Unto Jesus" can be sung ever Sabbath during the quarter, and "The Child Jesus," as you may desire. The children should be taught to find and mark each place as they learn about it. The "Suggestions for Teachers of the Little Folds," in the Westminster Teacher, will follow the lessons in this Quarterly, so that teachers and scholars can work together. The Outline Pictures of the Lesson Story are the same as those on the Colored Picture Cards. May God add his blessing as you teach.
Your friend,
Israel P. Black
